Gastrointestinal Issues in Cats

Gastrointestinal Issues in Cats

Cats, like most animals, suffer a host of different gastrointestinal issues. If you live in Cumberland, Maine, contact our veterinarian at The Pets Mobile Vet, and Dr. Michelle Maloney will be happy to treat your cat’s stomach problems.

What Causes Cat Stomach Problems?

Cats can have digestive and gastrointestinal problems, just like humans. Sometimes it's a simple problem like a change in diet, eating rancid or spoiled food, or even a hairball. But other times, it's something more serious that causes vomiting, diarrhea, and other symptoms. Conditions and diseases that can cause cat stomach problems include:

  • Internal parasites
  • Megacolon
  • Pancreatitis
  • Feline hepatic lipidosis
  • Foreign bodies
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD)
  • Cancer
  • Food allergies/intolerances

What Are the Symptoms of Cat Gastrointestinal Problems?

Because cats can't tell us what's wrong with them, and they often hide their symptoms, it's important to have a veterinarian examine your cat should he show any signs of stomach problems. Symptoms that your cat may exhibit include, but not exclusive to:

  • Diarrhea
  • Vomiting
  • Constipation (straining to poop)
  • Coughing or retching
  • Lack of appetite
  • Weight loss

What Should I Do if I Think My Cat has a Stomach Problem?

Many pet owners wait too long before having a veterinarian examine their cats when their cats have a stomach problem. Stomach issues can be dangerous for cats, and the sooner a veterinarian can examine your pet and treat him, the sooner your cat will start feeling better. If the problem is due to an underlying cause, a veterinarian can advise you as to which course of action is best, given the diagnosis. Our veterinarian will determine the underlying causes through bloodwork. Our mobile clinic has lab machines as well, so your cat’s blood results can be immediately obtained during the visit. Only a small amount of blood is needed to obtain immediate important information in order to develop a treatment plan.
