Heartworm Testing

Detect and Prevent Heartworm Disease

Heartworm disease testing is very important in order to catch diseases early. Our veterinarian provides these services to keep your pets safe and healthy.

Heartworm is a disease is caused by a parasite which looks like long, hair-like worms and live in the right ventricle of the heart. They are also found in the pulmonary artery, which is the blood vessel used to carry blood from the heart to the lungs.

Animals contract this disease by getting bit by an infected mosquito. The larvae pass from the mosquito into the animal and eventually attacks the heart. The larvae matures and produces more worms which circulate in the bloodstream.

Our Veterinarian Can Assist With Early Detection!

A small blood sample is tested in 8 minutes.

Early symptoms are hard to detect since there are usually no signs. However, when the disease progresses, animals become tired, begin coughing, and may even collapse. Advanced cases include heart failure, weight loss, and difficulty breathing.

Heartworm diseases can be treated with medication that is usually effective. Better yet, preventatives are available.

As a pet owner, it’s important that you have your pet tested once a year and administer a preventative medication to your pet. Keeping your pet free from the heartworm disease will keep them, and you, and your veterinary team very happy. Contact our veterinarian for more information today on heartworm testing.
